School management software in Equatorial Guinea: for which schools, and with what limits
Equatorial Guinea has a national system of Spanish tradition, taught in Spanish. Sahel EDU, school management software designed in Ngaoundéré, has no Spanish: it reads in French, English and Arabic. This page describes the national system, then says which schools in Equatorial Guinea Sahel EDU can serve, namely French-language, English-language and international schools, and what we do not promise.
A national system of Spanish tradition
The national system keeps Spanish names. Primary education lasts six years, in two cycles of three grades. Basic secondary education (ESBA) has four courses, followed by two courses of bachillerato, with branches in science, humanities, technology and arts. Vocational training is organised in two cycles, grado medio and grado superior.
The terms of the national system are Spanish: people speak of “grados”, “cursos”, “boletines” and “matrícula”, not of 6e, Terminale or series A, C, D. The pages on this site that discuss those classes therefore do not apply to this system.
- Pre-school: up to six years old, in infant education then parvularia.
- Primary: six grades, from the 1st to the 6th grade, in two cycles of three.
- ESBA: four courses, from 1º to 4º ESBA.
- Bachillerato: two courses, with specialisation from the first.
- Vocational training: grado medio then grado superior.
Exams, marking and the calendar
The end of primary school is marked by a primary studies certificate with a level exam, and the end of the ESBA by a graduate title. University entry goes through the “Selectividad”, a test run by the National University of Equatorial Guinea (UNGE), with an ordinary session in June or July and an extraordinary session in September, in Malabo and Bata. There is no national equivalent of the baccalaureate with series: the French-language series do not apply.
Marking runs from 0 to 10; the pass mark should be confirmed on a real report card. The year has three terms, with report cards handed out at the end of the year, evaluation boards (juntas de evaluación) to settle final marks and extraordinary exams to make up subjects. The calendar is the same for the whole country, with at least 200 days of classes, and it is set every year.
Languages of instruction, types of school and organisation
Spanish is the language of instruction. French is an official language and a compulsory subject in the bachillerato, Portuguese has also been declared an official language, and English is an optional subject. No official teaching in Arabic was found.
Schools are public, publicly contracted or private. A private school needs prior authorisation, and its prices must be approved. The Catholic network forms its own association, and parents’ associations are compulsory in every school. International schools follow their own system, Spanish or French. The country has two regions, island and mainland, and eight provinces; Malabo and Bata are the two main school centres.
What Sahel EDU can offer, and to which schools
Sahel EDU is today designed, validated and usable for schools in Cameroon. For a school in Equatorial Guinea, the application already reads in French, English and Arabic, counts in CFA francs and has the common tools: classes, marks out of 5, 10, 20 or 100, the register, fees and receipts, and documents that can be verified by QR Code. It therefore addresses French-language, English-language and international schools, not schools that work only in Spanish.

- Fees by item, payment schedules and numbered PDF receipts with the amount in words.
- The register and mark entry kept on the phone when the network drops, then sent again when the connection returns.
- Documents that can be verified by QR Code once the school’s opening authorisation has been verified.
What is set up with our team, and what is not
However, the levels, exams, calendars and official report cards of your country are not built in: they are set up with our team, school by school, before opening. Describe your situation to us: we will tell you frankly what is ready and what remains to be adapted.
We promise nothing about the Spanish-language national system. If a start is possible for your school, it begins with a free trial of 30 days, with no commitment; the price is then negotiated with each school.
